I use art in many ways to help them to relax, to build their self-worth, to help them reach beyond physical pain, depression – whatever ails them. My art lesson plans offer them many options and I emphasize that they are in complete control as I encourage them to make choices with their art. They are always so relaxed and happy at the end of each art session, and amazed to see the beautiful art they never thought they could create! Rabins, M.D., Lisa Gwyther, Jonathan Kozol, and Betty Ransom, Talking to Alzheimer’s helps people enjoy their relationships even as they are being transformed, and to hold on to present pleasures even while anticipating the losses to come. Creating art has always served as a means of self-expression and emotional release, and has been integral to my personal development. Given my scientific background, I now have a much better understanding of the role of art in catharsis and healing. Having studied Alzheimer's disease as a Pre-Medical student, I now understand the potential for art to stimulate memory retrieval, and mitigate depression and other symptoms of Alzheimer's disease. I enjoy sharing my passion for art with people living with AD and providing them with an emotional outlet, and a means of maintaining their identities through non-verbal communication, both within themselves, and also with their environment.
