Resident Assistants assist residents in activities of daily living and household tasks, and participate fully as team members in all aspects of the unit.

The most important qualification to be a resident assistant is a sincere desire to work with individuals with dementia, and an understanding of the uniqueness of each resident. A flexible approach to problem solving as well as compassion for residents and their families are essential qualities. Completion of required staff training is necessary to foster thorough knowledge and commitment to Hearthstone goals. Prior experience working with Alzheimer's disease or related disorders will be given special consideration.

In our New York residences, all resident assistants must have a Home Health Aide certification. In Massachusetts, each person must have completed a Home Health Aide, Certified Nurses Aide or equivalent training. Hearthstone occasionally offers state-approved 80-hour Home Health Aide classes; individuals without the necessary certification are encouraged to inquire about enrolling in this training.
